Surfaces, polyhedra and the Euler characteristic

A first course in the topologist's way of seeing: Euler's formula V − E + F = 2, the five Platonic solids, surfaces built by gluing the edges of polygons, orientability, the Euler characteristic as an invariant and the classification of compact surfaces.

Aprenderás a

  • Prove Euler's formula V − E + F = 2 for connected planar graphs and deduce that there are exactly five Platonic solids.
  • Build the sphere, torus, Klein bottle and projective plane by gluing the edges of a square, and decide which are orientable.
  • Compute the Euler characteristic of surfaces given as polygons with edge identifications, and use the classification theorem to identify them.

Definición

  • A (compact) surface is a compact Hausdorff space in which every point has a neighbourhood homeomorphic to an open disc.
  • The Euler characteristic of a surface divided into V vertices, E edges and F polygonal faces is χ = V − E + F.
  • A surface is orientable if it contains no Möbius band.
  • The connected sum of two surfaces is formed by removing a small disc from each and gluing the boundary circles together.

Teorema

  • Euler's formula: every connected plane graph satisfies V − E + F = 2.
  • There are exactly five Platonic solids.
  • The Euler characteristic of a compact surface does not depend on the chosen subdivision.
  • Classification: every compact connected surface is homeomorphic to a sphere, a connected sum of g tori (χ = 2 − 2g) or a connected sum of k projective planes (χ = 2 − k).

Errores frecuentes

  • Thinking topology ignores all structure; it keeps exactly the properties preserved by continuous deformations with continuous inverses.
  • Believing a Klein bottle must intersect itself; it cannot be embedded in ℝ³ but embeds in ℝ⁴.
  • Assuming Euler's formula holds for every polyhedron; for a polyhedron with a tunnel through it V − E + F = 0.
